Denver, Colorado – The Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence, presented by Downtown Colorado, Inc., recognize outstanding projects and people that reflect an attitude of perseverance and dedication to community revitalization in Colorado. Winning projects have been visionary and creative problem-solving solutions accomplished through local grassroots efforts, strong partnerships and innovation.
We are pleased to announce that the Downtown Denver Partnership’s Larimer Square Back Yard event was awarded the 2014 Governor’s Award for Downtown Excellence as Best Urban Public Space Project: The recognition for public space improvements that have enhanced the urban design, physical function or economic viability of downtown and the community.
The Larimer Square Back Yard was a pop-up public space demonstration that created a “back yard” party in the alley behind Larimer Square, featuring food, drink, music, seating and lawn games. The purpose of the project was two-fold:
- To provide a forum for the students of the University of Colorado Denver Master of Urban & Regional Planning program to present their final concepts for an alley master plan for Lower Downtown (LoDo); and
- To demonstrate various initiatives of the Downtown Denver Partnership to enhance and activate Downtown alleys as an extension of our public space network.
